Named for the '60s crime novel by Jim Thompson, Pop. 1280 are similarly bleak. Released nearly a year after the Grid 12", the music on the post-punk quartet's debut is atonal, full of noisy, jagged guitar strikes, brittle drumming, and minimalist, deliberately repetitive vocal shouts. Any sense of melody is thrown out the window. Instead, chief songwriters Chris Bug and Ivan Lip aim to create tension. Their label, Sacred Bones, has been on a roll for a while now (it's usually easy to tell a band on that label by the similar typeface on the CDs), and Pop. 1280 sit in the same fashionably dark outer fringe as most artists on the roster (Slug Guts, the Men, and Amen Dunes come to mind). The Horror was recorded in the Python Patrol basement studios in Brooklyn with engineer Ben Greenberg, and the music has a mean, snarling attitude that feels street-bred. "Bodies in the Dunes" and "Hang 'Em High" are pure nihilism, and the band's free-form style of playing is every bit as anti-musical and explosive as '70s no wave, making for a savage listen.

Imps of Perversion, Pop. 1280’s second full-length for Sacred Bones, finds the four-piece shaking off the hangover that was their critically acclaimed LP The Horror, and diving back down into the basement to enjoy the depravity. Recorded at BC Studio with legendary producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Cop Shoot Cop, Swans), Pop. 1280 have created their most cohesive and powerful statement to date. Woven together with stories of lust, sexual confusion, temptation, and debauchery, Imps forms a tight web of manic synth-punk, bad-trip acid jams and bludgeoning industrial beats. This is the sound of a band having fun and pushing the limits of their brand of industrial-punk with tighter songwriting and more dynamic musicianship. On Imps of Perversion, Gary Numan-esque analog synths bubble across acrid, blistering guitars, driving bass lines and crushing rhythms. From the opening noise-rock blast of “Lights Out” to the industrial groove of “Human Probe II” through to the synth-punk ripper “Do the Anglerfish,” this new album is a celebration of making bad decisions again and again. Pop. 1280 knows the party’s going to have to end, but they’re going to get their kicks before the drones lock in for the finale. They have toured the east coast and Midwest extensively, and they will be hitting the west coast for the first time this fall and Europe in winter.
