(an ------ actually)
I was happy to be absent from school. According to Mother, if the ache in my stomach worsens, I’ll miss a few more days of school. I couldn’t be happier but I had to act as if I was sad and upset. Mother believed my act. An actual actor or actress couldn’t have achieved the level of acting I just did.
I actually didn’t have a problem with my stomach. I couldn’t go to school and face Big Derek. Derek was two grades above me and stood about two feet over me. It was an accident when he heard me say he had a lot of muscle but his mother forgot to give him brains. He had more brains and muscles than I thought because he had the ability to understand and throw me across the room. It became his daily activity. He would find me about school and hurt me. If I didn’t act fast and hide when he came, I wouldn’t be able to tell you about my problems.
I was active in solving my problems, but I achieved nothing and gained more trouble. I hired Biff who was much larger than Derek to teach Derek a lesson. But when Biff came to school yesterday, I discovered Biff and Big Derek were cousins. Together, Biff and Big Derek wrote across the playground, “Charlie will die tomorrow!” Because of what happened above, I can never go back to school. I have accepted the idea of moving abroad to America.

  abandon --- accent)
At times I like to abandon my ability to speak and write in an academic way, which my friends call an abuse of language. When I am about to go aboard a plane to go abroad, I often still think about this. At these times I am so absent-minded that I almost miss the call for “ all aboard”. In another country I often avoid abstract language when talking to other academics and try not to accent every word. Instead, I aim for clear and simple communication to help others absorb what I am saying. This is not easy since I like to abuse language and always try to use the full range of language to the best of my ability. However, I think that one can abandon oneself to new experiences when overseas without treating one’s training with abandon. It has also been suggested that I get rid of my strong accent, and my absence from my county might accelerate this change. In the meantime, I’ll think of ways to use Band 4 words, in concrete ways, rather than in the abstract. Readers can then abstract what suits them best, from the book, towards developing absolute faith in their ability to master English.

Words:
abandon oneself to: 沉溺于;                  with abandon:放任地
to the best of one’s ability:尽自己最大努力    in the abstract:抽象地
1. Have Faith
You can call me A.J., which is an abbreviation of my full name, Alexander Justice. I like to abbreviate my name because it’s easier for people to remember. I work for a museum that collects aboriginal artifacts.
I would like to tell you why I have an abiding faith in the legal system. The story you’re about to read has been abridged to reduce its length.
I used to live in an area where criminals abounded and where the legal system seemed powerless. One day, my daughter was abducted. Although I abided by the kidnapper’s monetary demands, they refused to release her. I had no choice but to put my faith in the legal authorities. The Police responded immediately and searched the area. Despite their lack of success, they refused to abandon their search or to call an abort to their mission. They knew that any abortive action would surely result in my daughter’s death.
The investigation eventually led the police to conduct an abrupt search at the home of a local official who was abashed when he learned of the search. My daughter was found in his basement. She had abrasions to her wrists where the abrasive rope had scraped her. The official was arrested along with his bodyguard who abetted him in the kidnapping.
The official was forced to abdicate his position and was sent to prison for life. The judge told him that he was lucky that capital punishment had been abolished and that it was only due to this abolition that he would not be executed. The swift apprehension and strict punishment of these criminals helped to abate my lack of faith in the legal system. These days, I truly believe in “justice”, and it’s not because of my name!

Happiness
Useful words:
Naturally         Miserable
hell        Committed
Suicide         Drugs
Wealth         Obtained
lottery        Gamble
Contribution         Effort
Advantage         Base
Productive         Esteem
process        Achieve
goals        External
Circumstances

Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very rich people who are as miserable as if they were living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committed suicide or died from drugs. Quite clearly, money is not the only answer to all problems.

Wealth obtained through dishonest means does not bring happiness. Lottery winnings do not bring happiness. Gamble winnings do not bring happiness. To my mind, the secret to happiness lies in your successful work, in your contribution towards others’ happiness and in your wealth you have earned through your own honest effort. If you obtain wealth through luck or dishonest means, you will know that it is ill earned money. If you get your money by taking advantage of others or by hurting others, you will not be happy with it. You will think you are a base person.

Long-term happiness is based on honesty, productive work, contribution, and self-esteem. Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuous process of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.”  There is no use saying “Some day when I achieve these goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.” Life just does not work that way. If you wait for certain things to happen and depend on external circumstances of life to make you happy, you will always feel unfulfilled. There will always be something missing.
