出生于弗吉尼亚、在纽约成长的艾拉自幼丧父，生活并不宽裕，小时候就显露了歌唱的天赋，但是艾拉本人当时比较希望成为一个舞蹈家。1934年，十五岁的她参加在哈斯门歌剧院所举办的一场业余歌舞比赛，报考舞蹈一项，却因太紧张，两腿一直无法站稳，只得转报歌唱项目。她唱的是Connee Boswill的歌“The Object Of My Affection”。并得到首奖。当晚Chick Webb大乐团的主要成员Bardu Ai也听了她的歌声，激动不已，一直在Webb面前推荐这位女孩，Webb终于同意让她于次年的耶鲁舞会中与乐团同台演出，并协议：如果学生喜欢她，她便可以留下来。毫无疑问她被留下来了。
艾拉职业演唱生涯刚开始的时候是和著名的"小鸡"韦白爵士大乐队一起演出，30年代末，韦白去世之后，她继续领导乐队到1940年代初期，接著以个人身份单飞，和当时许多不同的乐团合作录音。1950年代是她事业的高峰，艾拉加入名制作人诺曼葛兰兹的VERVE唱片公司，在葛兰兹的规划安排下，以一系列"歌曲辑"作品，诠释多位美国作曲家包括乔治盖西文、科波特等人的作品，逐渐建立她爵士乐天后的地位，媒体和听众习惯称她为爵士乐的"第一夫人"，可以印证她多么受到尊崇与喜爱。
1955年起，Granz以兼具音乐性与商业性的作法，有计划的经营Ella的歌唱事业，并让她为他自己的Verve唱片公司录音，塑造她成为国际乐坛的头条人物。他深知Ella拥有不凡的爵士天份，但必须更进一步拓展演唱的曲目，才能将这股天份发挥的更完美。于是他让Ella从比较世俗的Tin Pan Alley曲调中走出来，开始演唱更具格调的音乐剧歌曲，第一部灌录的便是Cole Porter的歌曲集，后来Ella说：“这是我演唱生命中的一个转折点。”之后，她又陆续录了格什温，罗杰斯与哈特，艾林顿公爵等人的音乐剧作品。她后来吐露说：“演唱这些曲子，帮助我注入以前我所达不到的境界，而更好的是我能为那些从未听过这些曲子的人演唱。”而她自己最喜欢的又是什么？她说：“我喜欢美丽的事物，喜欢演唱那种能让人全然放松，像说故事一样的歌曲，我喜欢听别的歌手演唱，并去体会这些人唱歌时内心的感受。”是啊，Ella演唱时最注重的是与听众之间的心灵交流。
艾拉的嗓音一直保持一种年轻清亮的韵味，即使到老年也没有改变，她的演唱技巧非常高超，对节奏的掌握在所有歌手之中无人能及，演唱时往往能够变化节奏强弱，有时拖曳，有时突袭，就是不会死死板板一成不变，特别有一种"摇摆"的味道，原本简单平凡的歌曲，在她的演唱下彷佛一下子"活"了过来，爆发出无穷的深度与生命力。另外值得一提的，就是她著名的SCAT(吟唱)唱法，把歌词抛在一旁，完全不以歌词的文意来传达情绪，直接以人声当主奏，有时也和乐器即兴应答。
做为一位伟大的爵士女歌手，Ella Fitzgerald似乎永远不确知自己到底有多好，当她步下舞台，喝彩声从四面八方传来，全场观众起立给予她最高的敬意与欢呼时，她总会转向她的朋友，好像在请求宽恕似的问道：“我表现的还可以Ella Fitzgerald的音色充满了女性的特质与魅力，当她用绵密，轻柔的声音浅吟低唱时，没有人能将目光移开，如果我们以忧郁来形容Billie Holiday，那么Ella代表的便是一抹阳光。
男歌手Mel Torme曾说：“我常想，如果有爵士灵药这类东西的话，Ella Fitzgerald在一出生时便吞下了它。”她为DECCA唱片录音，在爵士俱乐部演唱，并在著名的经纪人与唱片制作人Norman Granz的安排下巡回演出。
艾拉的演唱影响了后世无数的爵士歌手，她所诠释的许多歌谣都已是爱乐者心中的经典，艾拉在爵士歌坛的声望至今仍然没有衰退的迹象，在格莱美奖提名的年度爵士乐唱片，由迪迪布里姬沃特所演唱的"亲亲艾拉"，正是向爵士乐"第一夫人"致敬的作品。

在听别的歌手表现高音时，我会为那一种穿透力的刺激所深深感染，却很少会觉得自己感觉上有什么不妥，但在听埃拉·菲茨杰拉德（EllaFitzgerald）时，我却总是能感觉到埃拉的声线会穿过厚厚的层层阻隔进入我的肺部，只有随着她的高音起伏，与其他歌手不同的还有她往往不仅在句子的最后将音拖得长长，而是随心所欲地将乐符在即兴中或长或短的行进着。
不过除了高音，埃拉真正让后世叫绝的还要算是“拟声唱法”（Scat），当你听到她在柏林现场模仿查理·帕克（CharlieParker）《Howhighthemoon》中的一段经典独奏时，你无疑会对造物主造人的不公表示出很深的不满。而同样在柏林现场翻唱鲍比·达林（BobbyDalin）和路易斯·阿姆斯特朗（LouisAmstrong）曾经唱过的作品《Maketheknife》(伪君子)时，她居然能在忘词的情况下将“What’sthenextchorus?”这样的句子完美而妥贴地融入到演唱里时，你是不是会想，如果是你也许唯一的办法就只有用“啦啦啦”搪塞过去，不过你不用脸红，因为埃拉·菲茨杰拉德（EllaFitzgerald）毕竟只有一个。
