Americana trio South for Winter’s newly-released debut album, Luxumbra, is eclectic in the best sense of the word. From start to finish, the album takes the listener on an electrifying journey; beginning with the sweeping, string-laden pull of “Twine,” building to the mid-album crescendo of Southern-gothic ballad “Devil is a’Calling,” and finally diving back down into the ethereal, harmony-laden arrangement of “Stone.”
You’d be surprised to find that Luxumbra is New Zealand-born, Nashville-based South for Winter’s debut full-length record – every track and every musical choice feels meticulously planned and executed. When speaking with the band, however, another side of the album’s creation is revealed:
“Luxumbra translates to ‘light’ and ‘shadow’ in Latin,” explains lead singer Dani Stone. “For us, the name doesn’t just fit the different styles and genres of the songs on the album; it also describes the crazy highs and lows we experienced as a band leading up to the album’s release. Every time something happened that could have stopped the album from being released – and fully stopped our music, if we’re honest – we received an opportunity or a helping hand that kept us going. Two years after we started this record, against all odds, Luxumbra made it into the world.”
Whether it was launching a crowdfunding campaign just before a tornado hit Nashville, being on tour in New York City the day the city shut down from Covid-19 this past March or blowing two van transmissions within six months, the band is no stranger to overcoming obstacles. However, if pressure makes diamonds, the trio is sitting on gold – and, according to them, much of it is thanks to the great minds involved in Luxumbra’s creation.
“This album evolved into something even better than we could have imagined thanks to all the incredible people who were involved,” states guitarist, singer, and co-writer Nick Stone. “We realized early on that all three of us (Dani Stone, Alex Stradal, and myself) really clicked when writing music together – and that each of us contributed something vital to every song. However, taking it to drummer Chris Kearney, GRAMMY award-winning producer, and bassist Matt Leigh, and tracking engineer Bryce Roberts sonically elevated these tracks to another level. Each one of them put so much creative energy into the album, and made it become what I feel is our best work today.” – Nick Stone
If you are looking for an album that will take you from dreaming, to rocking out, to singing, dancing along, check out Luxumbra by South for Winter. Also, keep an eye out for future endeavors from this trio. Great things are coming their way.
Review:
The long, awaited, full-length debut from Nashville gypsy-folk-rockers South for Winter delivers on all the promise that has built up around the band the past few years. Luxumbra is a powerful statement from the trio of Nick Stone (vocals, guitar), Dani Cichon (vocals, mandolin), and Alex Stradal (cello). The simplicity of the band’s lineup is belied by the strength with which they play and the deeply complex music they create that exists somewhere in the nebulous area between blues, acoustic-folk, and jazz explorations, all delivered with thoughtful lyrics and lilting harmonies. Luxumbra is an album that has lived up to the hype that has surrounded South for Winter the past few years, and follows through on the promise of potential that has swirled around the band. South for Winter named the album ‘Luxumbra’, which is latin for light and shadow, to showcase the mix of heavier folk-rock ballads and lighter acoustic duets featured on the record. The band was years in the making and writing of the album as they envisioned it as complex song-cycle and created linking instrumental interludes to connect songs and devised the album to come full circle with the last guitar lick on the album in the song, ‘Stone’, matching the first lick in the opening track, ‘Twine’. ‘Luxumbra’ is a complex meditation on life, an ethereal, dreamy, journey sharpened with an underlying aggressive blues-edge, but simultaneously softened by Cichon’s dynamic voice and range, and tempered by floating cello runs. It is a journey well-worth taking.
