Japanese remastered edition of Whitesnake second album with four bonus tracks
From RateYourMusic:
Whitesnake was formed in 1978 by former Deep Purple vocalist David Coverdale. Coverdale wanted to make Rock music with Blues and Soul influenced and not another Purple like hard rock album, like his two solo albums were. He also wanted to be just a part of the band like Eric Clapton when he decided to quit Cream to play with Delaney & Bonny.
Together with the guitarist Bernie Mardsen and Micky Moody, bassist Neil Murray, keyboarder Pete Solley and drummer David Dowle he starts to write songs, some of theses musicians already played on David Coverdale’s solo records. Together they recorded the debut album “Trouble” in just 10 days. Just before the record was finished legendary keyboarded Jon Lord from Deep Purple joined the band, because he liked the blues based rock, Whitesnake played, it was the same kind of rock music Jon Lord played in the mid sixties before Deep Purple was founded. Within 2 days he recorded all the keyboard parts on “Trouble”.
“Trouble” was already a very good album but on the band needed some time to grow together. Their second studio album “Lovehunter” was recorded in the Clearwell Castle in Gloucestershire in the mobile studio of the Rolling Stones together with producer Martin Birch. The band had more time to record and to develop their ideas than on their debut albums. According to the band members they were having a good time in the castle, they drunk a lot but they came up with new ideas every day and worked hard on their second studio album.
The two guitarists Micky Moody and Bernie Mardsen became a great guitar team, their interaction in the studio was great and together with singer David Coverdale they wrote most of the songs of the album.
The album was released in October 1979 and in my opinion it is the best Whitesnake album with great guitar work by both guitarist, a great vocal performance by David Coverdale and also the input of Jon Lord is very good: He didn’t try to make the same kind of organ play he did with Purple and stayed in the background.
My favorite songs of this great album are the opening and catchy “Long Way from Home”, the titletrack, which features a great slide guitar performance by Micky Moody, “Medicine Man”. Also the rocking “Walking in the Shadow of the Blues” and “Rock N’ Roll Women” are great tracks. The remaining tracks are also quality work by the British Blues rock combo and can’t be considered as filler.
