nathema可以说是90年代最受低估的乐队了。刚起步时没人会知道你被低估了，因为那个时候你已经被低估了，有时候会那些有才华的人们会备感折磨。这些话绝不是自夸自大，而这种情况也确实是Anathema的负担。乐队的诞生、孕育和成长都深深刻有利物浦的风范，乐队的这四个成员同时也是四个好朋友（其中两个是弟兄）对于Anathema传奇性的开端很是感到骄傲。
然而到1999年6月Anathema发行他们的第五张专辑“Judgement”——这绝对这10年里是一张定义同类音乐风格的专辑！Judgement录制于意大利 Ventimiglia的Damage公司录音棚，Kit Woolven（Thin Lizzy和Cradle Of Filth）担当了制作人，Anathema花了足足3个月录制完成了他们的这张杰作。在专辑制作完成以前已有消息说这张专辑中将会有非常特别的东西，而Anathema录音期间在意大利做的一些演出正暗示了这点。
“Judgement”最终在1999年6月21日浮出水面，马上受到广大歌迷和评论的一致喝彩，专辑被公认为神圣崇高而富有启示意义，同时全球有20多家杂志将“Judgement”评为月度最佳专辑，凡是自称为摇滚乐迷的人会引用这张专辑来提及这支极端金属的最前沿乐队Anathema。
当这三个人——Vinnie,Danny和Jamie Cavanagh玩弄着一两把又老又破的原声吉他的时候，几乎没人会想象出他们能达到什么地步。但就在一年之后他们第一张小样“An Iliad Of Woes”完成了，1990年时便在地下音乐圈里广为流传，在如此早的阶段就有人认为Anathema相当出色而且前途无量，但没有人会预测到乐队将来到底会取得如何的成就。
第二年乐队又继续出了第二张小样“All Faith Is Lost”，同年乐队也以官方形式发行了第一张唱片——一张由Witchhunt唱片发行的7"EP，名为“They Die”。凭借着这几张唱片的实力，Peaceville签下了Anathema，不久后边发行了“The Crestfallen”，一张为歌迷焦急等待的单曲碟。然而唱片却没有让让歌迷们失望，歌迷们还给予了“The Crestfallen”任何唱片发行都无法得到的赞誉。到了这个时候Anathema那独特的风格已日趋成熟，并在乐队的第一张专辑“Serenades”中得到了集中体现。这张专辑发行不久后又是一张名为“Pentecost III”的mini-CD，唱片的风格类似于乐队的第一张专辑，也体现了乐队非凡的创作能力。
紧接着这张唱片是乐队的第二张专辑“The Silent Enigma”，主唱Darren White在录制进行到一半时离开了乐队。为了完成这张专辑吉他手Vincent Cavanagh顶替了主唱位置，而Anathema也尽可能完成专辑的录制工作。结果这张专辑还是一张出色的作品，并体现着Anathema音乐自然而然的进步，而所剔除的是含糊的合作方式以及旧的歌曲结构，同时专辑展现了更多简明的金属交响曲，却没有失去诗篇般的独特魅力，专辑里还包括乐队演唱会时令人激动欢心的压轴曲目“A Dying Wish”。现在人们已开始认识到这个来自利物浦的年轻乐队迟早有一天将成为一个伟大的音乐组合。
Anathema的下一张专辑“Eternity”然而也是乐队对自己音乐做的最大一次的改动，但“Eternity”至少也是如史诗般一样的作品。专辑的时间正好是1个小时（不包括extra tracks），一共12首关于爱情及死亡的悲惨痛苦的歌曲，其中还有一曲Pink Floyd的“Hope”（Dave Gilmour做主唱时的Pink Floyd）翻唱。Vincent依然担当主唱一职，而且不象前些专辑中几近咆哮般的嗓音，Vincent用一种更为成熟更有技巧的方式表现自己的嗓音，在Anathema感情低调的音乐中衬显着Vincent庄严的声音，乐队深厚功底更增强着古典音乐元素的底蕴——这种音乐随后取得了良好的回响。
接下来的两张专辑里Anathema体现了一种完全不同的风格,在原先音乐的基础上做了果断而重大的调整。“Alternative 4”是乐队第四张专辑，但仍会象他们第一张专辑一样给人以全新的感觉，Anathema面目一新的音乐再次博得广泛的喝彩，而“Alternative 4”也成为乐队历史上一张比较杰出的专辑。尽管音乐中加入大量传统摇滚乐元素，但仍如前几张专辑一样保持着自己阴暗的一面，再加上简洁的专辑制作还有Vincent出色的主唱表现，“Alternative 4”无疑是乐队最精练的一张作品，这也是贝斯手Duncan Patterson最后一次为Anathema录制的专辑。
1999年乐队发生了一系列变化，加盟Music For Nations并还找来了新的贝斯手Dave Pybus，以及原来的John Douglas做鼓手，随后乐队去意大利录制了“Judgement”。Anathema原先几张唱片销量都很好，但乐迷们知道乐队最经典、最具代表性的专辑还没有出世。而到了新千年，即乐队10周年的前一年，这种等待总算结束了。
键盘手Les Smith（Les Smith在乐队为专辑“Eternity”做的巡演上就曾出过一份力）在2001年加入了乐队，并且参与了创作的工作，Les的成果在专辑中有着鲜明的体现，他也在录制专辑期间担当了工程师助手。Anathema的第六张专辑“A Fine Day to Exit”发行于10月1日，这张“A Fine Day to Exit”由Nick Griffith（Cast,Mansun,Pink Floyd）出任制作人，乐队用2001年的整个夏季最终在Chapel的Windings录音室完成了录制工作。“A Fine Day to Exit”再次说明了乐队有能力探索新的音乐疆界，同时又不失原先音乐中的梦幻氛围以及感情标准。专辑一经发行便取得了热烈的反响，并被认为是Anathema迄今以来最为出色的作品。在完成录制后不久的7月，Dave Pybus由于一些个人原因和音乐上的意见不合而决定离开乐队，同时George Roberts为乐队巡演担当了临时贝斯手，但Anathema仍在寻找下一位永久贝斯手。
Anathema依靠去做每一位艺人都应该能够做到的事情——写出好的作品——而达到了自己的目标。现在Anathema开始全球巡演只是时间问题了，因为这是乐队现在应该去做的。
